Schaumburg Flyers News Release

GAME ONE

Gary, IN - The Flyers (14-28, 45-45) started a winning streak Tuesday night with a seven inning, 1- 0 victory over the Gary Southshore RailCats (19-22, 43-46) in game one of a doubleheader. Dave Dobosz and Nate Cotton combined for the Flyers second consecutive shutout. Dobosz broke a five game losing streak and improved to 4-5 while Nate Cotton earned his 16th save.

The Flyers needed just three hits to beat the RailCats. Two of the three hits came in the top of the sixth inning. Sandy Almonte led off with a hard hit ball to the left-center field gap. It rolled all the way to the wall and Almonte pulled up at third with a stand-up triple.

Rob Watson drove Almonte in with a double to left and the Flyers had the only run they would need.

The win moves the Flyers back to the .500 mark at 45-45.

GAME TWO

Gary, IN - A five-run sixth inning by Gary shot down the Flyers (14-29, 45-46) hopes of a double-header sweep. The RailCats (20-22, 44-46) defeated Schaumburg 8-2 in seven innings in game two.

Gary scored their first runs of the night in a three run second inning. RailCat right-fielder Andy Rohleder hit an opposite field line drive 2-run homer and Eric McNamee added an RBI single that put the RailCats up 3-0.

Josue Lopez flexed his muscles in the fourth with a towering 2-run homer of his own to right field that brought the Flyers within one. It was Lopez's 10th homerun of 2006.

Rick DeHart left the game in the bottom of the fifth trailing 3-2 with runners on the corners and one out. Right-hander Chris Andel struck out right handed hitting Chris Curry and Matt Schweitzer retired Jarrod Patterson to end the inning.

Schweitzer remained in the game for the sixth but wouldn't fare as well. Gary put five runs on the board with Tanner Townsend and Jermaine Allensworth both singled in two runs with a Mike Coles RBI double sandwiched in between.

Nelson Gord was 2-2 with a walk for the Flyers.

The first half champion Flyers have already secured a spot in the postseason. The 2006 Northern League playoffs will kickoff on September 5th and 6th with Schaumburg hosting two first round games. Both games will begin at 7:05 PM.
