Orange County Flyers News Release

A first inning two-run deficit turned into a four-run deficit, which the Surf Dawgs were unable to overcome, eventually falling to the Fullerton Flyers 5-2 at Tony Gwynn Stadium tonight. Chris Jakubauskas (4-1) picked up the win for Fullerton while Justin Ottman (3-3) took the loss.

One of the highlights for the Surf Dawgs tonight was Cuban hurler Yoankis Turino, making his first relief appearance at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Turino pitched beautifully, working two innings and setting down everyone in order with two strikeouts.

Seth Pietsch, who had to leave the game in the fourth inning, walked before leaving, extending his consecutive games on base streak to 35 games.

The Dawgs had a golden opportunity to come back in the bottom of the seventh while trailing 5-1. Robert Mason came in to relieve starting pitcher Chris Jakubauskas and ended up walking the bases loaded. With two down, Kevin Ciarrachi, who entered the game for Pietsch, was at the plate. To increase the drama, Ciarrachi took him to a full count. The 3-2 offering was outside for ball four and Jeremy McCann scored to make it 5-2 Fullerton. With the bases still loaded, Scott Goodman strolled to the plate but struck out to end the inning.

Ryan Fox, who made his Surf Dawgs debut last night, made his pitching debut tonight. After playing as the designated hitter for eight innings, Fox entered the game in the ninth in relief of Mike Leishman. Fox pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two in the process. In the past two games Fox has played in left field, pitched, and acted as the team's designated hitter.

The Dawgs would make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Johnny Day led off the inning with a single but stood at first while Adam Mandel and Nick Guerra were retired. Kevin Ciarrachi singled and there were two on with two outs for Goodman. Goodman was first-pitch swinging and flied out to left to end the game.

Jeremy McCann went 1-for-2 tonight with a double, a run scored, and two walks. McCann, who joined the team just before their last road trip, has gotten a hit in eight of the nine games he has played with San Diego. Coming into tonight, McCann was hitting .379 in 29 at bats.

San Diego will look to win the four-game series tomorrow when these two teams meet at 5:05 p.m. PT. Todd Gelatka (2-3) will be on the hill for Fullerton (3-4) and Jake Meyer (1-2), who is coming off a solid start in Reno, will throw for San Diego (4-2).
