Orange County Flyers News Release
The Flyers returned home and to their winning ways as they sunk the Armada 7-2 and put an end to their losing streak...
It was back to home sweet home for the Orange County Flyers as they hopped on the back of pitcher/coach Ben Fox (2-0) and used his stellar pitching performance to halt their losing streak at 4 games and get the victory, 7-2, over the rival Long Beach Armada on Monday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
Flyers starter Fox led the team to the much needed win pitching a complete game giving up only 2 runs on 7 hits and 10 strikeouts, while clinching a .500 19-19 1st half record for the Flyers as they now head into the 2nd half of the season seeking a spot opposite of the 1st half Champion Chico Outlaws in the Golden Baseball League Championship Series starting with tomorrow's game again against the Armada.
The Flyers started off the game with a Fox HBP on Armada pesky lead-off hitter John Kaplan, but Fox settled in after that by striking out the side and then continued to dominate the rest of the game.
2B David Bacani started off the Flyer 1st inning with a lead-off double off Armada starter Ryan Claypool (2-2), who was wild all night hitting 6 batters and throwing a wild pitch. Flyer CF Garry Templeton ll sacrificed Bacani to 3rd and Pohle brought him in with a ground ball RBI single up the middle that got the Flyers on the board 1-0.
Flyer 1B Peanut Williams beat ot a potential inning-ending double play ball and the Flyers took adavantage as DH Scott Goodman got a bloop single to adavance Williams to 3rd and then Williams scored on the Claypool wild pitch to make it 2-0 Flyers after the 1st inning.
The Flyers got another run the 4th inning as 3B Mark Okano got a lead-off double over the head of Armada CF Kaplan, who lost the ball in the lights. After a walk and a HBP to load the bases with 1 out, Claypool walked Pohle to score Okano and give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.
The Flyers put it out of reach with a 3-run, 3-hit 6th inning to give them a 6-2 lead. Pohle got his team-leading 37th RBI on the season with an opposite field ground-rule double to left and Williams hit a 2-run RBI single to right to give the Flyers the cushion.
Goodman added the final Flyer run in the 8th to make the final score 7-2 in favor of the Flyers. Goodman had a break-out game after struggling and seeing his batting average dip to .219 on the season, going 3-5 with an RBI on the night.
Pohle again led the Flyers with his 3 RBIs, while going 2-4 with a run scored and a walk.
The Flyers look to jump-start their 2nd half run with another game against the rival Long Beach Armada tommorrow night at 7:05 at Goodwin Field.
