Flyers Lose Late

July 29, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL-Justin Justice hit his sixth home run of the season, and Mike Coles put Fargo-Moorhead on top with a double in the seventh as the RedHawks won a back-and-forth affair with the Flyers 5-3 Wednesday at Alexian Field.

The Flyers got on the board first in the bottom of the third. The newest Flyer, Lyndon Poole, who went 3-3 in his debut yesterday, hit his first home run as a Flyer to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

It became a pitching duel between starters Dustin Glant and Scott Fogelson until the top of the sixth when the RedHawks finally got to Glant. Justice's homer came to lead off the frame, and later in the inning, Nic Jackson collected his 60th RBI on a single scoring Zach Penprase, giving the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.

The Flyers came right back in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. With two outs, Jose Valdez reached first on an error by Ruben Salazar. After he stole second, Victor Ferrante laced his sixth triple of the season to right scoring Valdez. Richard Mercado then continued his great second half-hitting, plating Ferrante on a single to right to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead.

But the RedHawks rallied in the top of the seventh. Glant loaded the bases with one out and was relieved by Josh Giles. Coles then delivered with his double, scoring Alan Rick and Carlo Cota. Penprase would come home on a Justice RBI groundout to give Fargo a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Dunbar hit a two-out double off RedHawks reliever T.J. Stanton, but Craig Maddox struck out swinging to end the game.

Dustin Glant pitched well but took the loss, throwing 6.1 innings giving up five runs while striking out one. Glant falls to 5-4 on the season. Yosandy Ibanez collected a victory in relief for the RedHawks, pitching 0.1 innings. Adam Tollefson and Stanton threw the final shutout innings. The Flyers have lost 12 of 15 to fall to 29-36, while the RedHawks have won 13 of 17 to improve to 35-28 on the season.

These two teams conclude their string of seven games in a row tomorrow night, first pitch at 7:05. The Flyers send LHP Alain Quijano to the hill (3-3, 5.53) to face RHP Matt Mossey (2-0, 3.03) of the RedHawks.
