Orange County Flyers News Release
An inning after tying up the game, Flyers relievers give up 5 runs in the 9th inning and the Flyers go down in defeat.
After being shut out for 7 innings, the Flyers broke through with 2 runs in the 8th and tie the game, only to go on and give up 5 runs in the 9th and lose, 7-2, to the St. George Roadrunners on Wednesday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
Flyers 2B David Bacani hit a 1st inning lead-off triple (his team-leading 5th of the season) to start the Flyers off on the right foot, but the Flyers failed to capitalize in the inning and were then shut out for the 1st 7 innings by Roadrunners starter Mark Woodyard (2-8).
Woodyard dominated the Flyers offense, shutting them down while pitching 7 innings and giving up no earned runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts.
Flyers starter Mike Natale (3-3) failed to get any help from the Flyers offense for the 2nd consecutive start. He pitched a solid 7 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 10 strikeouts.
The Roadrunners got to Natale for 2 runs in the 6th inning to go up 2-0. 3B Juan Melo drove a 3-0 pitch over the right field fence for a lead-off home run (his 6th of the season) to get the Roadrunners on the board and after Natale hit CF Santiago Guerrero with a pitch, DH Brett Flowers' 2-out RBI double into the right field corner knocked Guerrero in for the second run of the inning.
Woodyard was replaced by Roadrunners' reliever Donavan Graves (0-0) in the 8th and the Flyers took advantage immediately as Flyers 1B Peanut Williams (after adjusting his uniform and redoing his batting gloves and perhaps throwing off Graves' rhythym) hit a 1-out solo home run to right for his 8th homer of the season and get the Flyers on the board. After Graves was replaced by Anthony Pluto (2-0) RF Johnny Coit hit a looping RBI double to shallow left that tied the game at 2-2 after 8 innings.
The Roadrunners' Flowers again hurt the Flyers in the 9th as his lead-off single to right on a 0-2 pitch by Flyers reliever Andrew Soto (2-2) catapaulted the Roadrunners to a 5-run inning that sealed the deal for the Flyers.
The loss dropped the Flyers to below .500 on the season with a 29-30 record and 10-11 in the 2nd half of the season. The Flyers match up against the St. George Roadrunners again tommorrow night at 7:05 at Goodwin Field.
