Orange County Flyers News Release
Relief pitching proved to be the Orange County Flyers achilles heel once again as they ruined a promising Flyers start in their return home after a dissapointing road trip by giving up 7 runs in the 9th to the Long Beach Armada...
Flyers ace RHP Reed Dickert(2-1) and OF Rich Pohle provided a stellar 1-2 punch for the Flyers, but it wasn't enough to overcome a torrid 7-run 9th inning rally by the Long Beach Armada as the Armada scored a 8-5 comeback win over the Flyers on the 4th of July at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
The Flyers attempted to start the game off with a bang as the Flyers RBI leading OF Pohle hit a 2-out double off Armada starting pitcher Rich Fischer(2-1) and was then followed by a 1B Peanut Williams double off the left field wall. Pohle was called out at the plate though in a bang-bang play that drew the ire of Flyers manager Gary Templeton.
Some real fireworks started in the 3rd after Flyers OF Gary Templeton II singled to left to load the bases. Pohle then stepped up to the plate and redeemed himself with a blast to right field for a grand slam and a 4-0 Flyers lead after 3 innings.
The Flyers added to their lead in the 5th when 2B David Bacani hit a lead-off triple (his 3rd of the season) to continue his 14-game hit streak. Pohle (3-4, 1 run) then got his 5th RBI of the night on a gound ball single to score Bacani and give the Flyers a 5-0 lead.
Flyers starter Dickert pitched 8 stellar innings for the Flyers, but to no avail. He pitched 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball, gave up only 1 earned run on 3 hits, while striking out 9 batters.
The Flyers seemed to be cruising towards a much needed victory to end their 6-game losing streak when RHP Nate Holguin(1-1) came in to pitch the 9th inning. Things did not go as planned for the Flyers.
Holguin did not get a single out as he walked Armada DH Chris Wakeland to start the inning. Armada 1B Jamie Martinez then singled to right and then LF Dan Trumble homered to left field for his 2nd homer of the season and close the Flyer lead to 5-4.
After walking pinch-hitter Jason Mooneyham, Holguin was replaced by LHP Daniel Arizmendi(0-2). Arizmendi provided no relief as he also failed to get an out for the Flyers. After walking a batter and letting Armada SS Jorge Araiza get on base on a fielding error, he was replaced by RHP Jared Terrebone(0-0).
Terrebone had trouble finding the strike zone as he walked Armada lead-off hitter John Kaplan to tie the game up at 5-5. Terrebone provided a glimmer of hope for a Flyer rally in the bottom of the inning when he got RF Chris Klemm to hit into a double play that prevented an Armada runner from scoring. Terrebone then hit a 3B Jeff LaRue a load the bases again with 2 outs.
Armada DH Wakeland then hit the dagger straight to the Flyers heart with a bases clearing double to center field to give the Armada an 8-5 lead and cap off their 7-run 9th inning rally.
Armada RHP Dane DeLaRosa(0-0) came in for the 9th to get his 1st save of the season as the Flyers went 1-2-3 to continue their losing streak to 7 games.
The Flyers hope to get revenge against their rival Long Beach Armada tomorrow at Goodwin Field in the 2nd game of a 3-game series.
