Flyers Celebrate Birthday with Victory

November 18, 2006 - NBA G League (G League)
Fort Worth Flyers News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Fort Worth Flyers celebrated their first anniversary with a birthday bash and preseason game versus the Austin Toros today at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

Although Austin controlled the opening tipoff and much of the first quarter, the home team eventually devoured the visitors for a 118-94 triumph.

In the first quarter, play remained steady as the opponents exchanged baskets and free throws. The Toros ended the period well, holding the Flyers scoreless for the final few minutes. It paralleled a

10-0 run by Austin which bridged the first and second quarter.

The Flyers finally broke the drought when guard Kevin Burleson took free throws after being fouled by Toros guard Brock Gillespie. It pioneered a Flyers recovery as the home team engineered a double-digit lead and went up 57-47 with 3:19 remaining in the second quarter. The Toros chipped away at the lead, clawing their way to a 61-54 deficit at the end of the half.

In the third quarter, the Flyers continued their momentum and built a double-digit lead that peaked when the third quarter ended to give the Flyers a 92-73 edge.

In the fourth quarter, guard Corey Santee broke the century mark for the Flyers with 6:58 remaining to give the Flyers a 101-80 advantage. The rest was icing on the birthday cake as the Flyers soared to a victory.

Jeremy Richardson led the Flyers with 26 points, and Kelenna Azubuike chipped in with 21.

Brad Buckman was the scoring leader for the Toros with 21 points, and Melvin Scott and Justin Bowen also reached double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Even with a 20-point advantage, the Flyers remained intense and focused until the final buzzer and never lost their concentration.

Guard Terrance Thomas said the team played aggressively and executed well on the defensive end, something head coach Sidney Moncrief has stressed.

"When you have a coach that played in the NBA, and Coach Moncrief played hard and with aggression, it just rubs off on you," Thomas said.

Thomas noted that the early slump was just butterflies and that Moncrief told the team to calm down and play.

Moncrief said the team played hard defensively and made good adjustments to come back for the victory.

"We did a lot of positive things on the offensive end and also defensively," he said. "This game gave us a good opportunity to see the players execute what we have learned in practice."

The team will conclude training camp during the upcoming week and reduce the roster to 10 players on November 22. The Flyers will travel to Austin to face the Toros for the season opener on November 25.

The Fort Worth Flyers home opener is Friday, December 1 against the Bakersfield Jam at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Season tickets begin at $99, and flex book and group ticket packages are also available. For more information, log on to fwflyers.com or call (817) 698-8333.
