Fluke Goal Sends Falcons to the Brink

FRESNO, Calif. â Miguel Delisle spun a slow-moving wrist shot toward the Fresno Falcons net with less than two minutes to play in regulation that caromed off Tyler Prosofsky past goaltender Terry Friesen to serve as the game-winner on Saturday in the San Diego Gulls' 4-2 victory in Game Five of the Taylor Cup Finals at Selland Arena. The Gulls now lead the best-of-seven series three games to two.
The Gulls took advantage of some Falcons penalty trouble in the first period as Trevor Sherban fired from the blue line past a screened Friesen for the first goal of the game at 13:02 on the power play. Bruce Watson then capitalized on a Fresno turnover in the neutral zone and ripped a slapper into the net just 27 seconds later to give San Diego a 2-0 lead heading to the second.
Rob Bonneau finally got the Falcons on the board at 9:06 of the second when he poked home rebound. Glen Gulutzan then tied the game at two at 14:10 with another rebound goal off a mad scramble in front of Gulls netminder Trevor Koenig.
Still tied at two late in regulation, it appeared the teams would be heading to overtime for the second straight game. That's when a broken play through the neutral zone ended up with the puck on Delisle's stick just inside the Fresno line. His shot appeared to bank off Prosofsky past an unsuspecting Friesen for the deciding goal at 18:21. Dean Tiltgen added an empty-netter for the final 4-2 margin 16 seconds later.
With the victory, San Diego now moves within one win of clinching their fifth Taylor Cup title. Game Six is next Saturday, May 10, at the San Diego Sports Arena at 7 p.m. If Fresno wins to force a Game Seven, the decisive match would be held on Sunday, May 11, at 5 p.m. in San Diego.
