Florida Launch News Release
WASHINGTON - A year after becoming the first ever Native American to co-win the Tewaaraton award, Lyle Thompson made more history as he became the first person to ever be crowned back-to-back winner.
The Tewaaraton award is given annually to the best college lacrosse player. Last year L. Thompson and brother/Launch teammate Miles Thompson shared college lacrosse highest honor, while this year he stood on the stage with the trophy in his hands as its sole owner.
Thompson ended his record-setting college career in 2015 with 52 goals and 69 assists for 121 points, the second-most points in a season trailing only his 2014 total of 128. For the third straight season, Thompson led the country in points per game with 6.37; he led the NCAA in assists and assist per game with 3.63 and tied for 10th in goals, contributing to Albany's top-ranked offense. Under his leadership Albany went 16-3, winning the American East Conference for the third-straight season, and making it to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The repeat Tewaaraton award caps off one of the greatest collegiate careers in NCAA history. With his college career in the books Thompson finished with a plethora of NCAA Division I records; including most points in a career with 400, most assists in a career with 225 and most points in a season with 128.
Thompson has had as successful an award season as he had on the field, taking USILA DI Player of the year, USILA First Team-All America, America East Player of the Year and America East All-Conference First Team.
In his Major League Lacrosse debut, Thompson showed promise for the Launch with one goal and three assists for four points, tied with potential MVP candidate Kieran McArdle for most points in the contest.
