Florida Flight News Release
Orlando, FL - Members of the Florida Flight shared their morning with children at the Crisis Nursery of the Children's Home Society of Florida Saturday, September 18, 2010. Teammates Ernest Jones, Andy Haas and Garvin Gordan joined Rabon Smith (Director of Game Day Operations) and Mark King (Owner) to shoot baskets, sing songs, dance, and play other games with over 15 kids who currently call the Crisis Nursery their home.
"We play basketball to win, but the real championship is in events like this," said King. "In a world where gray areas and uncertainty abound, deciding whether or not to spend time doing events like this is simply black and white."
King dropped off tickets last season for two separate games so that kids from the Central Florida Home Society could attend. Volunteer coordinator Amanda Chadwick took the opportunity to suggest additional ways in which the Flight could exercise the mission statement to "utilize the platform of professional basketball to invest in the lives of others". One of those suggestions was to share a half day spending time with the kids at the Crisis Nursery.
The event is the first of many to come since the Flight bolted to play in the Continental Basketball League for the 2011 season. On September 24-25, the Flight will enter a team to play in Hoops for Hope, a 3-on-3 tournament organized by River Run Christian Church in Chuluota, Florida to raise funds and food donations for the Oviedo-based Hope Foundation. In addition to playing, members of the Flight are also volunteering to assist with organizational tasks to help the event run smoothly.
"We have some really exciting updates to share," King said. "We're establishing some key partnerships, and we've solidified our reputation within the community as a team that you can call on for help. I'm particularly excited to share how we are going to do tryouts this coming season, but that's going to have to wait until we get some of the essential details ironed out."
Interested players can still register to participate in the upcoming Hoops for Hope Tournament. Details can be found online at www.flighthoops.com, www.centralfloridahoops.com, or at www.riverruncc.org. Players can also contact Brian Doran, River Run Director of Student Ministries, at 407-977-5433.
