
Florida Flame Acquire Swingman Austin Nichols

FORT MYERS, Fla., November 22 - According to an announcement by Head Coach Jeff Malone, the Florida Flame has acquired guard/forward Austin Nichols from the NBA Development League available player pool and released forward Romel Beck.
A veteran D-League player, Nichols was waived by the Albuquerque Thunderbirds in training camp on November 11. Nichols, a 6-6, swingman out of Humboldt State ('04), played in 48 games for Huntsville (now Albuquerque) last season, averaging 23.3 minutes, 10.3 points and 2.5 rebounds. Nichols led the D-League in free throw percentage, shooting a league-best 88 percent from the foul stripe. Nichols also finished the 2004-05 D-League campaign strong, averaging 15.9 points per game in the month of March and 14.0 points per contest in the Flight's final 15 games of the season.
Originally a second round pick of Huntsville in the 2004 D-League Draft (tenth overall), Nichols played collegiately at Division II Humboldt State in Northern California where he earned Division II First Team All-American honors from Basketball Times as a senior and All-West Region Team honors from the NABC and Daktronics his final three years in school. Nichols was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Year in 2003-04 and was a three-time First Team All-Conference selection. He finished his collegiate career as the all-time leading scorer in Humboldt State and GNAC history with 2,502 career points, also ranking in the GNAC all-time top ten in rebounding (fifth with 705), three-point field goals made (fourth with 193), and steals (seventh with 125). The Oakland, Calif. native led Humboldt State in scoring all four years. As a senior in 2003-04, Nichols averaged 21.4 points (ranked 20th nationally) and 5.2 rebounds.
Nichols is expected to be in uniform when the Flame opens the 2005-06 season this Friday at Germain Arena. He will wear jersey #10.
The Flame tips-off its second season in its home opener, Friday, November 25 at 7 p.m. as they take on the Roanoke Dazzle at Germain Arena.
