Southern Illinois Miners News Release
FLORENCE, Ky. - The Miners dropped the finale of a seven-game road trip with an 11-1 loss to the Freedom Sunday evening.
Sean Teague returned from injury to make his first start for the Miners since June 22 and took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year. Freedom starter Alec Lewis tossed a complete game, and held the Miners to one run off three hits. He struck out a career high 13 batters en route to his third victory of the season.
Florence jumped to an early lead with three-runs off three hits and a pair of walks in the first inning. They added five more off five hits in the second inning to extend the lead to 8-0.
Sean Harrell led off the third inning for the Miners with his third home run of the season to cut the deficit to 8-1.
Teauge tossed a scoreless third inning and retired the first two batters of the fourth before walking Kevin Haas and Junior Arrojo. The final walk, Teague's sixth of the game, marked the end of his night. Starter Shawn Joy entered to make his first relief appearance of the season. The southpaw made 29 relief appearances for the Miners in 2010.
Joy surrendered three consecutive hits before recording the final out of the inning with the Miners trailing 11-1.
Miners first baseman Ernie Banks sprained his ankle when he collided with Cole Miles at first base. Miles was beating out an infield single that was hit to second baseman Nate Hall. Banks left the game in the bottom of the fourth and was replaced in the field by designated hitter Gordie Gronkowski.
Without a designated hitter or any healthy position players on the bench, the Miners pitchers were forced to bat for the remainder of the game. Left-handed reliever Ryan Quigley pinch hit for reliever Ryan Zink in the top of the seventh and lined a single to centerfield for his first professional hit.
Zink, Corey Martin and Clayton Dill combined for four scoreless innings to close out the game, but the Miners offense could not mount a threat.
Lewis faced one more than the minimum for the first six innings of the game before walking Matt Fields in the seventh. The Miners put two men on base in the seventh and eighth innings, but did not score.
Southern Illinois will return home on to begin a three-game series with the Grizzlies on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 7:05 p.m. Shawn Joy (6-3, 3.52) will make the start for the Miners against Andre Caceres, Jr. (2-2, 5.40) of the Grizzlies. It will be a Two 4 Tuesday with two-for-one tickets.
