Huntsville, Ala. (Mar. 5) â Down three with 40-seconds remaining, Huntsville Flight guard Mateen Cleaves connected on two free throws, sank a game tying 3-pointer, and after a steal dished to Marcus Fleming, who sank the game winning lay-up as the Flight defeated the Charleston Lowgators 104-102 in tonight's National Development League action.
With the win the Flight snapped a four-game home losing streak and increased to 17-16. Prior to tonight, the Flight hadn't won at home since January 31. The Lowgators fall to 20-14, suffering their third straight loss since February 27.
"It's good to win. It's especially good to win at home," said Flight head coach Ralph Lewis. "We needed this win to prove to ourselves that we are a good ball club. Now we need to capitalize on this momentum and win tomorrow."
The Flight led by as much as 20 points in the second quarter before the Lowgators mounted a comeback with a 17-4 run to pull within seven at the half. Charleston continued this pace, outscoring Huntsville 30-26 in the third quarter and opening the fourth quarter with a 5-2 run to tie the game at 80. The Lowgators eventually took an eight-point lead before the Flight responded, tying the game at 92 with four minutes left.
Tierre Brown paced the Lowgators, scoring 23 points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing five assists. Rico Hill scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Ime Udoka tossed in 19 points and seven boards.
Rick Apodaca, in his second game since returning from a hand injury, scored a team high 21 points. Ken Johnson scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Rod Grizzard and Cleaves each added 15 points.
The Flight returns to action tomorrow night at 7:00 PM against the Roanoke Dazzle. Charleston returns home to host Columbus on March 7.
