Western New York Flash News Release

Elma, N.Y. (Wednesday, January 8, 2014) - The Western New York Flash has announced its protected and unprotected player lists for the upcoming 2014 NWSL Expansion Draft. As a 2013 playoff team, the Flash (along with Kansas City, Portland and Sky Blue) were allowed to protect nine players, while the four non-playoff teams (Boston, Chicago, Seattle and Washington) could protect 10. The Expansion Draft will take place on Friday, January 10th.

The Houston Dash will become the ninth club to join the NWSL when they begin play this season. They will be able to select up to ten (10) players in the Expansion Draft, though no club can lose more than two players. The results of the Expansion Draft will be announced starting at 11 a.m. (ET).

As the only NWSL club with two U.S. allocated players, the Flash were allowed to protect both Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd. All other clubs, because they have more than two U.S. allocated players, will be required to leave at least one U.S. allocated player unprotected. The Dash will be allowed to select no more than two U.S. allocated players, one Canadian allocated player and one Mexican allocated player.

In addition, Flash defender Alex Sahlen will be exempt from the Expansion Draft as she is missing the 2014 season due to pregnancy.
