FC Kansas City News Release
PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kansas (January 8, 2014) - FC Kansas City has announced a two-year partnership with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) that will allow the team to play home games at Stanley H. Durwood Stadium through the 2015 National Women's Soccer League season.
"We are Kansas City's professional women's soccer team," said FC Kansas City President, Brian Budzinski. "We are excited to bring world-class soccer to the campus of Kansas City's university."
The Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field (DSSRF) serves as the official home of the Kangaroos and provides student-athletes, students and community groups with one of the top soccer facilities in WAC and the Midwest. The $9 million dollar addition adds to the growing residential feel of the UMKC campus.
DSSRF currently provides seating for 850 fans along with press suites, a ticket booth, and concession stand, while a separate addition hosts locker rooms for men's and women's soccer, softball and track & field, as well as offices for the respective coaching staffs. As part of the agreement, FC Kansas City will increase seating to a capacity of 3,200.
"The support in our first year was beyond what we could have expected," continued Budzinski. "We understand the seating capacity is smaller than what our average attendance was last season, but we felt the move to a soccer-specific facility of this caliber was important for our fans' game day experience and for the players on the field."
UMKC's Athletic Director, Carla Wilson, has high hopes for this partnership. "This is one more way for us to connect with the broader community in Kansas City. This is a sports town. Our teams are important to us. I love the idea of inviting our community to come to our campus, to cheer for a successful, winning professional franchise that we can all be proud of."
FC Kansas City will play at least twelve regular season home games at Durwood Soccer Stadium for each of the next two seasons. Fans that have already placed deposits for 2014 season tickets will be contacted in the next week by their account executives to facilitate the placement of their seats. Season tickets will go on sale to the public on Monday, January 20th at 10a.m. CT.
FC Kansas City is a Women's Professional Soccer Team competing in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). The "Blues" Inaugural Season saw them set numerous NWSL records and sweep all six individual post-season awards.
