Florida Flame News Release

Fort Myers, Fla., March 15 - Florida Flame players will make a special appearance at Royal Palm Exceptional School in Fort Myers this Tuesday, March 21 as part of the Flame's Read to Achieve program, sponsored by Chico's.

Tuesday's activities at Royal Palm Exceptional School will run from 1-3 p.m. During the event, Flame players will participate in reading "timeouts" with educationally and emotionally challenged students and distribute books to those in attendance. In addition, a group of Flame players will meet with middle school and high school students for a question and answer session.

Royal Palm Exceptional School is located at 3050 Indian Street in Fort Myers.

The mission of Royal Palm Exceptional School is to provide an opportunity for each student to be involved in a well planned, structured program that is best suited to meet each individual's needs. With an enrollment of just under 200 students in grades pre-K through high school, Royal Palm is the only school of its kind between Tampa and Miami. Students are assigned following a finding of emotional disability and nearly all of the students face learning disabilities. Areas of attention are behavior, communication, socialization, and academics. The ultimate objective is to assist students in the successful return to their geographical school or to the program which is the least restrictive environment for each student.

Read to Achieve promotes the value of reading and online literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children. Read to Achieve serves as the Florida Flame's primary community activity in hopes that the Southwest Florida community will be united to impact one of the most pressing issues our society faces - illiteracy.

Read to Achieve is part of the D-League Cares program and is designed to promote reading and literacy to children and families in NBA Development League, NBA, and WNBA cities across the country. Read to Achieve has been recognized as one of the top programs in the NBA and all of professional sports, with the goal of instilling a life-long love of reading in young people, and to provide greater access to books and technology in our community. The Florida Flame launched their Read to Achieve program in October 2004 and have devoted their time to share the love of reading with over 4,500 students at Read to Achieve events throughout Southwest Florida. The Flame have also given the students a gift of books to take home.

The Florida Flame is the official D-League affiliate of the NBA's Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Orlando Magic. Showcasing the best young talent in professional basketball outside of the NBA, the Flame play a 48-game schedule during the 2005-06 season with 23 home games at Germain Arena. Led by a group of local investors, the Flame is now in its second season of providing affordable, family entertainment to sports fans throughout Southwest Florida.
