Dazzle nip Patriots 115-114
March 15, 2006 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
ROANOKE, Va., Mar. 15 - Will Bynum put up his seventh double-double of the season, recording 30 points and 13 assists, both game highs, to lead the Roanoke Dazzle to a 115-114 victory over the Fayetteville Patriots at the Roanoke Civic Center.
The game started much as it would end with a one point difference after the first quarter. However, unlike the end result, it was the Patriots who held that slim advantage behind the stellar play of Detroit Pistons' prospect Amir Johnson who scored 10 of his 25 points in the stanza.
In the second, fireworks erupted with Bynum throwing down one of his many highlight reel dunks on the night and Dazzle forward Bryant Matthews being ejected for throwing a punch at a Patriots player. Despite the excitement, the Patriots were able to keep their cool and extend their lead to three points at 58-55.
In the third quarter the Dazzle grabbed momentum with Bynum continuing to heat up by dropping 10 points in the frame including a buzzer-beating three-pointer to extend a Dazzle lead to 93-84.
The fourth quarter was a story of runs with the Dazzle extending their lead early in the quarter to 14 points. The Patriots would race back to take a seven point lead. Ultimately the Dazzle would make the last run of the game, with Bynum hitting two free-throws, with five seconds left to play to give the Dazzle the lead as well as provide the final score 115-114, as the Patriots were unable to hit a last second shot.
"Both teams played really hard." said Dazzle Coach Kent Davison. "There were stretches where we allowed them to get the ball in the post too many times, but our defense was better tonight."
The Dazzle starting five all reached double figures in scoring behind Bynum's 30, Anthony Grundy had 25, Seth Doliboa chipped in 24, Peter Ramos put up 17 and Isiah Victor dropped 12. Dazzle forward D'or Fischer came off the bench to grab a game-high 10 rebounds.
For the Patriots, their starting five also reached double figures in scoring with both Pistons prospects leading the way. Alex Acker scored a team-high 29 points, Johnson added his 25, Mateen Cleaves contributed a double-double with 17 points and 12 assists, Rick Rickert chipped in 13 and Erik Daniels had 12 points.
With the win the Dazzle improve to 20-20 overall, and will next host the Austin Toros for a pair of weekend games this Friday and Saturday at the Roanoke Civic Center.
The Patriots had their four game win streak snapped and now drop to 12-26 on the season. They will next host the Tulsa 66ers on Friday night at the Crown Coliseum.
