Port Huron Flags News Release

(ROCKFORD, ILL.) - At Memorial Coliseum for the second time in eight days, the Port Huron Flags shut down the Fort Wayne Komets' offense in a 4-0 thrashing of the western conference opponent.

After handing the Komets their first shut out loss at home in over two years last Friday, the Flags returned to Fort Wayne yesterday, looking to take away another import ant road success. Their win gave Port Huron its fiftieth point of the season, passing the franchise record, set at 49 in 2005-06. It was also the first time in team history that the Flags blanked a team in consecutive match-ups.

The first period passed without either team finding the net, despite Fort Wayne's 13 shots on goal and Port Huron's nine. The visitors played tough defense, as they found themselves shorthanded four consecutive times in the first twenty minutes of play.

Colt King got things rolling at 1:20 in the second, when his goal from Kris Vernarsky started the onslaught against the Komets. Sixty-five seconds later, Greg Bullock tallied another, with assists from Ben Gustavson and Chris Bogas, which prompted the replacement of net-minder Kevin St. Pierre with Dan McWhinney. At the ensuing face-off, Mark Cadotte and Bruce Richardson gave the crowd a reason to cheer when they dropped the gloves. It would be the only time of the night that the Fort Wayne fans would get excited.

In the final frame, Steve Hildenbrand set off the goal light at 13:35, assisted by Mike James and Ryan Markham. Markham potted the final marker of the evening at 16:24 on an assist from Bogas.

Dustin Traylen was perfect on all 32 of the Komets' attempts, earning his fourth shut out of the season and his second honors as first star of the game in Fort Wayne. St. Pierre took the loss for the home team, with 10 saves on 12 shots, while McWhinney stopped 12 of 14 in the no-decision. Markham (1g, 1a) and Bogas (2a) were named second and third stars, respectively.

The Flags, who are 4-1-0 in their last five games, host the Elmira Jackals at 5 p.m. at McMorran today. Currently Port Huron trails Elmira, who is 2-3-0 in its last five, by one point in the standings. In a trade earlier this week, the Flags sent winger Bobby Kukulka to the Jackals in exchange for Scott Wray. Wray and Kukulka will face off against their old squads for the first time this evening.

MUGS AND PUCKS! The Flags are hosting a social cocktail mixer on Wednesday, Mar. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Quay Street Brewery in downtown Port Huron. For $20, guests will enjoy a buffet of appetizers, two drink vouchers and a mingling session with the Flags team members. Commemorative glass mugs will be available for purchase, at $5 a piece. Call (810) 982-FLAG (3524) to reserve your tickets today!
