Port Huron Flags News Release

(PORT HURON, MICH.) - In front of 1,819 hometown fans, the Port Huron Flags acquired their second home victory against the Rockford IceHogs, dominating the visitors 4-1.

While both teams played physically in the first period, and each recorded 11 shots, no goals were scored.

In the second, a much anticipated fight broke out between Rob Snowball and Erick Lizon. Snowball landed multiple blows to Lizon's head, setting off the rowdy Port Huron crowd. Moments after the fighters were sent to the box, Rockford's Jason Notermann beat Dustin Traylen at the net to score the first goal of the night, giving the IceHogs a 1-0 lead. About three minutes later, a second fight nearly broke out when several of the IceHogs maliciously went after Josh Elzinga, who had been tripped and was on the ground. As a result, both teams were assessed with two roughing penalties. Amidst all the aggression on the ice, Rockford managed to shoot 9 times on goal, while Port Huron recorded 10.

The first minute of action in the third saw 4 play stoppages. Nathan Lutz and Garett Cameron were called for unsportsmanlike conduct, just 8 seconds into the period. A Luke Fritshaw penalty at :37 set up the tying power play goal by Mike Olynyk, at :44, assisted by newly signed Bobby Kukulka and Chris Bogas. Ryan Markham was sent to the penalty box at:55 for interference, followed closely by a cross-checking call on Traylen. However, the Flags defense came up big and killed the 5-on-3 IceHogs advantage. At 9:50, Mark Cadotte, the Flags leading scorer, sent the puck past Frederic Cloutier to put the Flags up 2-1. With the momentum on their side, the Flags set up an electrifying goal a minute and a half later. Colt King rocked an IceHog at the boards, turned around, scooped up the puck and made a beautiful pass to Elzinga, who capitalized at 11:12. Mike Olynyk was also credited with the assist. Rockford pulled Cloutier with two minutes left in the game, only to watch King score an empty-netter, off an Olynyk assist. Rockford's 7 shots on goal were doubled by Port Huron in the third.

AT&T's 1st, 2nd and 3rd Stars of the Game were awarded to Cadotte, King and Olynyk, respectively. The Flags next home game is Sunday at 5 p.m., against the league leading Muskegon Fury.
