Port Huron Flags News Release
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - One goal from the visiting Quad City Mallards was all it took to clinch victory over the Port Huron Flags, in front of 2,529 fans, the largest McMorran crowd of the season.
Hits and aggressive skating were the story of the first period, as both teams skated out strong to start the game. Goaltender Brad Smith, who signed with Port Huron this week, took his place between the red pipes for the first time in McMorran. With just two penalties assessed and no goals scored, the initial frame of the match passed quickly, as the visiting Mallards outshot the Flags 11-5.
Quad City launched an offensive strike in the second, firing on goal 14 times, but a round of spectacular saves from Smith kept the score at nil. The Flags recorded seven of their own, but Jason Tapp denied them all.
The only goal of the night was highly controversial, as Travis Granbois crashed into the net, pushing Smith and consequently the puck, which was under Smith's pads, behind the line. Don Parsons was credited with assist at 16:25. When Granbois was sent to the penalty box for hooking with just 38 seconds left on the clock, the Flags had the opportunity to send the contest to a shootout, but they were unable to set up a play, despite outshooting the Mallards, 6 to 1, in the final twenty minutes of play. Tapp recorded a shut-out and Smith made 36 saves in the loss.
AT&T's Stars of the Game were given to Granbois, Smith and Tapp. Port Huron heads on a road trip next weekend and returns to McMorran on Friday, Feb. 9 to host the Muskegon Fury at 7:30 p.m.
