Port Huron Flags News Release

(PORT HURON, MICH.) - Despite a big third period effort, the visiting Port Huron Flags were unable to overcome the Flint Generals at Perani Arena, in an important conference game.

The first period proved mildly uneventful, with just a handful of penalties across the board. A holding call on B.J. Adams led to a Flint power play goal at 13:06. Jeff Zehr capitalized, off assists from Terry Marchant and Bobby Reynolds. Flint posted 11 shots on Dustin Traylen, compared to Port Huron's 10 against Jason Muzzatti.

At 3:55 in the second, Mike Zbriger sent the puck into the net, giving the Generals a 2-0 lead. After that, the Flags tightened up on defense, refusing to allow another Flint goal, even when shorthanded, five men to three. A bench minor was called against the Flags, for too many men on the ice, at 16:19, followed 20 seconds later by a cross-checking penalty on Adams. An impressive effort from Pat Sutton led the Flags to the biggest penalty kill of the night. Port Huron out shot Flint in the second period, 8-7.

Although the third started off slow for the Flags, it picked up when Pat Sutton scored at 9:14, assisted by Ryan Markham and Mark Cadotte. A minute and a half later, Mike Olynyk and David Frawley dropped their gloves. The Flint crowd stayed subdued as Olynyk threw Frawley to the ground, clearly winning the fight. Head Coach Stan Drulia pulled Traylen in the last minute, but Muzzatti and the Generals defense were not going to let anything stand in the way of their first home victory of the season.

Flint took all honors on the night, with Muzzatti, Zehr and Zbriger claiming the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Stars of the Game. The teams face off again on Friday night at McMorran Arena.
