San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - After back-to-back losses, the Missions offense responded in a big way on Friday night. After allowing two runs in the bottom of the first inning, a three-run home run from Reinaldo Ilarraza highlighted a five-run second inning for San Antonio. With scoreless outings from Moises Lugo, Henry Henry, and Alek Jacob, the Missions ended their brief losing streak with a 7-4 victory.
Lake Bachar was the starting pitcher for the Missions. Friday night marked his 12th career appearance against the Hooks. It was not a warm welcome for Bachar as the Hooks took the lead in the first inning. After striking out the first batter of the inning, Bachar allowed a walk to Luke Berryhill. The next batter was Yainer Diaz who homered on the first pitch of the at-bat. His sixth long ball of the season made it a 2-0 lead.
Misael Tamarez was the starting pitcher for the Hooks. After a successful first inning, he failed to finish the second inning as the Missions five runs on four hits. With one out in the inning, Thomas Milone drew a walk and Juan Zabala hit a single. Ripken Reyes drove in Milone with a single to left field. After recording the second out of the inning, Reinaldo Ilarraza lifted a fly ball over the right field wall for a three-run homer. Following the long ball, he issued a walk to Connor Hollis and allowed an RBI double to Kelvin Alarcon. He was replaced by Jonathan Sprinkle following the Alarcon hit. The Missions gained a 5-2 advantage.
The Hooks had a chance to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second inning. Will Wagner started off the inning with a base hit. Jordan Brewer later singled with one out in the inning. Bachar left those runners stranded after recording a fly out and a strikeout.
San Antonio added to their lead in the top of the third inning. Zabala drew a one-out walk and stole second base. Reyes reached base on a fielder's choice while Zabala advanced to third base. Chandler Seagle drove in Zabala with a sacrifice fly. The Missions lead improved to 6-2.
Corpus Christi cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning. Berryhill drew a walk to start the inning and Justin Dirden hit a single. A wild pitch from Bachar moved both runners into scoring position. With two outs in the inning, Will Wagner singled into left field and scored Berryhill and Dirden. The Missions held a 6-4 lead after three innings of play.
Bachar was replaced with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Moises Lugo inherited a runner at second base with two outs. He left the runners stranded after striking out Berryhill.
Lugo records his fourth win of the season (4-0) after 2.2 scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed one walk while striking out six batters. He ties Osvaldo Hernandez for the most strikeouts in a game for a Missions reliever this season.
Henry Henry replaced Lugo with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. He retired both of the batters he faced. Alek Jacob recorded the save after tossed scoreless innings in the eighth and the ninth.
The Missions added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Facing Matt Ruppenthal, Hollis drew a walk and Alarcon hit a single. Leyba drew a walk to load the bases. Juan Fernandez hit a single to right field and scored Hollis. Milone and Zabala both struck out and Alarcon was thrown out trying to steal home. The Missions improved their lead to 7-4.
