Five-Run Rally Boosts Bees over Rainiers

The Salt Lake Bees bounced back Saturday night with a 5-3 win over the Tacoma Rainiers at Smith's Ballpark in front of 10,503 fans. The Bees improved to 43-49 with the win while the Rainiers fell to 39-52. Salt Lake scored all of their runs during a two-out, five-run rally in the third inning that included RBI from Matt Thaiss, Monte Harrison, and Jack Mayfield.

Thaiss and Harrison both went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Jose Rojas went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. David Fletcher went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk as he continued his rehab assignment from the Angels. Cesar Valdez put together his league-leading eighth quality start and earned his seventh win of the season. He pitched six innings and gave up just one run on four hits while striking out six batters.

There were two outs in the third inning when Rojas hit a double and sparked the huge rally. Kean Wong reached on a single to left field and Thaiss brought them both home with a double. Mayfield hit a single to bring home Thaiss, Magneuris Sierra reached on a double, and then Harrison singled them both home to make it 5-0 Bees.

Tacoma got on the board in the fifth inning and cut the lead to just two runs in the eighth with a two-run home run. Jonathan Aro came out of the Bees' bullpen in the ninth and shut the door, earning his third save of the season.

Tacoma and Salt Lake will play the rubber match of the series tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. with Pioneer Day fireworks following the game.
