Kinston, NC-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, trailed early and never recovered at Grainger Stadium Wednesday as the Kinston Indians took the third game of the series with Salem 5-3. The Indians (5-11) scored all of their runs In the first against the Avalanche (10-9).
Before Kinston could come to the plate, Salem threatened Kinston starter Hector Rondon. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out, but Jimmy Van Ostrand and Jhon Florentino struck out against Rondon to end the half-inning.
In the home portion, Adam Davis opened with a double against Salem's Corey Bass. On the next pitch, John Drennen socked a single to score Davis and give Kinston its third first-inning lead of the series. After a groundout, Nick Weglarz walked. The next batter, Carlos Rivera, rolled a ball to third base. Florentino, attempting to begin a double play, hurl the ball into right field to load the bases. After Todd Martin singled to left to bring the lead to 2-0, Niuman Romero walked on five pitches to score the third run. Two batters later, Alex Castillo punched a two-run double to left for a 5-0 lead.
Salem countered in the seventh against reliever Neil Wagner. After a walk and wild pitch put Sal Iacono at second base, Greg Buchanan singled the backstop home for the first Salem run. Then, back-to-back hits for Cesar Quintero and Tim Torres scored Buchanan. Immediately after, Jordan Parraz grounded out to third to plate Quintero and make the score 5-3. The Avs only mustered one baserunner after that point, though, as Luis Perdomo tallied his second save of the series.
In the loss, Salem's Parraz reached on a first-inning walk to extend his on-base streak to 16 games. Torres' RBI single gives him a nine-game hit streak.
