Clearwater Threshers News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs put up a five-spot in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie on Sunday, as the Clearwater Threshers suffered a 6-2 loss in game three at Charlotte Sports Park.
Brody Colvin started but exited the ballgame after just two innings of work. He took the hill to begin his warm-up tosses prior to the third inning, but was pulled before the start of the frame.
Colvin had allowed two hits and one walk through his two innings. He was replaced by right-hander Kevin Walter.
Clearwater plated the game's first run in the second inning against Charlotte starter Austin Pruitt (3-1).
With Logan Moore at second base and two down, Angelo Mora singled to center on a payoff pitch to bring home Moore and boost the Threshers to a 1-0 advantage. The throw to the plate was cut off, and Mora was tagged out while attempting a dive back to first to end the inning.
The Stone Crabs brought the game even in the third inning, pushing across a run without the aid of a hit.
A hit batsman sandwiched in between two walks loaded the bases with nobody for Charlotte. Walter then got Leonardo Reginatto to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, but Josh Sale scored from third to tie the game at one.
A pair of errors in the sixth inning opened the door for a five-run frame for Charlotte. An error, single, and wild pitch put two runners in scoring position, and with the infield drawn in Tyler Goeddel hit a grounder that was mishandled by KC Serna at third, allowing a run to score to make it 2-1 Charlotte.
The Stone Crabs would go on to push across four additional runs in the inning, with Jonathan Quinonez capping off the rally with a two-run single off Dan Child to give Charlotte a 6-1 cushion.
Clearwater managed to get one back in the seventh inning facing reliever Leonel Santiago. With runners on first and second with two down, Moore pulled a double just inside the first base line to bring home Pete Lavin from second.
Walter (0-2) suffered the loss for Clearwater, despite tossing a season-high 3.1 innings. He allowed four runs - only one earned - on just one hit, while permitting three walks and a hit batsman.
The Threshers wrap up the series in Port Charlotte on Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The call can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:15 p.m.
