Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - October 4, 2010) - The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball today announced that Bridgeport Bluefish outfielder Steve Moss, infielders Josh Phelps and Joe Jiannetti, and pitchers Luis Gonzalez and Jorge Julio have been named to the 2010 Atlantic League Postseason All-Star Team. Moss and Julio were honored on the First Team, while Phelps, Jiannetti and Gonzalez were named to the Second Team.
"We are very pleased to hear that all five have been named to the team and wish nothing but the best" said general manager Bob Goughan. "They were strong contributors to the team all season long and we are happy that they have received these honors."
Moss was a Player of the Year candidate all-season. The First Team righthanded batter was top-ten in each of the following Atlantic League categories: Moss produced a .321 average (t-7th), 22 homers (t-3rd), 83 RBI (8th), eight triples (T-5th), 88 runs (6th), and an on-base percentage of .404 (T-7th) which was highlighted by a 41-game on-base streak. Moss set career highs in homers, RBI, and triples during the year. The outfielder also compiled 54 extra-base hits.
Julio notched 28 saves to be named to the First Team. His 1.15 ERA was the top mark among relief pitchers who tossed a minimum of 30 innings this season. The righthander fell two appearances shy of tying the previous Bluefish record set by Mike Guilfoyle (Chris Rivera and Antonio Alfonseca also passed Guilfoyle this year). Julio struck out 57 batters in 55 frames and opponents hit .193 against the closer.
Phelps was a force for the Bluefish in the lineup as he claimed Second Team honors. Phelps earned a .310 average (10th) with 10 homers and 67 RBI. The first baseman stole a career high 15 bases in 16 attempts in 100 games. The righthanded batter was signed by the Cleveland Indians organization, before returning to the 'Fish.
Jiannetti was a big bat for most of the season with Bridgeport in earning Second Team honors. The righthanded hitter collected a .326 average (4th in the Atlantic League), 13 home runs, 64 RBI, and had a slugging percentage of .507 (10th). During the season, Jiannetti played second base and third base in the field. The slugger produced two multiple-homer games this season.
Luis Gonzalez joined the Bluefish for this first season in the Atlantic League and earned a 9-4 record with a 3.56 ERA in 96 innings pitched, earning him a place on the Second Team. The southpaw earned the lowest earned run average for those pitchers who have tossed a minimum of 90 innings during the season. Gonzalez also struck out 88 batters.
