Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals got another strong performance from starting pitcher Justin Fiske, shutting out the San Antonio Missions by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday night in San Antonio.

Fiske extended his personal shut-out streak to 13 1/3 innings, tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings, while allowing seven hits, as part of Springfield's seventh shut-out of 2008.

Mark Shorey's RBI triple brought home Jim Rapoport in the third inning with the game's only run, as Springfield took a 1-0 lead over San Antonio starter Will Inman.

Fiske (2-0) allowed two base-runners in the sixth, turning the ball over to Luke Gregerson one out into the inning. Gregerson got Seth Johnston to ground into the inning-ending double-play, preserving the 1-0 lead. Gregerson would work a total of 1 2/3 innings, before handing the ball to Luis Perdomo, who worked a scoreless eighth.

Fernando Salas worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his league-high 22nd save of the year.

Inman (8-6) pitched well in defeat, allowing just one run on six hits over six innings.

With their sixth win in their last seven games, Springfield (25-20) remains three games back of Northwest Arkansas in the North Division. Brandon Dickson (1-0) will look to keep things going for Springfield, as he'll take on Manny Ayala (6-2) on Thursday night in game two of the series. Game time on Thursday from Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium is 7:05pm. The Cards return to Hammons Field next Wednesday night, taking on San Antonio and Corpus Christi as part of a six-game home stand.
