New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats announced today the departure of President and General Manager Shawn Smith who has made a personal decision to leave the team to pursue other opportunities. As part of his role as President and Chief Executive Officer of DSF Sports & Entertainment, Rick Brenner, will assume the duties of Fisher Cats President and General Manager.
Brenner has been an executive in minor league baseball for 13 years spending three seasons as the Eastern League Vice President and six seasons as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of the Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees and previously the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Under Brenner's leadership the Trenton Thunder was the first team in minor league baseball history at the Double-A level to draw 400,000 fans for eleven consecutive seasons. In 2003 Rick was named the Eastern League's Executive of the Year and the Thunder was awarded the coveted Larry MacPhail Trophy for Minor League baseball's top promotional/community effort. In 2005, his last year as General Manager of the Trenton Thunder, his organization was awarded the prestigious John H. Johnson President's trophy as the nation's best baseball franchise.
"I am confident that Rick's extensive experience, proven track record, and involvement with the team this past year will allow him to smoothly assume the duties of the President/GM position and continue to build on the Fisher Cat's growing success" said Fisher Cats Owner, Art Solomon. Brenner was instrumental in bringing rock and roll performer Bob Dylan to Merchantsauto.com Stadium. According to Solomon, Brenner will continue pursuing top performances and non-baseball events at the stadium while overseeing the daily operations of the ball club.
"I look forward to exploring new and creative ideas for the team and the community," said Brenner. "This is a beautiful stadium in an outstanding community and I can't wait for the home opener next April."
Smith's departure comes after three successful years with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, including the 2004 Eastern League Championship title during the team's inaugural year. "While this was a difficult decision to make, I remind myself that I have had the wonderful opportunity of bringing professional baseball back to New Hampshire," said Shawn Smith. "I am proud of the organization's accomplishments during my three seasons with the team and admittedly look forward to spending time with my growing family during the off-season."
"Shawn has made significant contributions to the Fisher Cats' overall success, and I wish him the best of luck," said Fisher Cats Owner, Art Solomon.
