Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-4 Thursday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The runs came early in game three of the series, beginning with Southern Maryland's push to take the lead in the first inning. Jamar Hill and Christian Colonel started things off with back-to-back walks, and Hill continued on to steal third, marking his 40th stolen base of the season. Eric Crozier followed with a base hit through the right side, bringing home Hill.

Bridgeport kept the first inning excitement alive in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two runs to steal the lead from the Blue Crabs. Two consecutive one-out walks for Hiram Bocachica and Steve Moss put runners on for Josh Phelps, who singled to left field to score Bocachica. Luis Lopez knocked in Moss, the go-ahead run, on a single to right.

A third run came in for the 'Fish in the second inning, stretching the lead to 3-1. Another walk put the leadoff batter, Luis Rodriguez on base, then Colin Roberson reach on a hit by pitch, and a walk for Brandon Chaves loaded the bases for Bridgeport. With one away, Bocachica hit a ball above the lights, out of the sight of Southern Maryland's left fielder, resulting in a base hit and an RBI as Luis Rodriguez crossed the plate.

Jamar Hill's fifth inning solo shot for the Blue Crabs left Bridgeport in command by just one run, and Southern Maryland worked its way back to tie the game in the eighth inning against Antonio Alfonseca. The rally began on a base hit from Richard Giannotti, and Casey Benjamin drilled a double to right field, putting runners in scoring position. Christian Colonel picked up a one-out base to left, enough to bring in Giannotti to tie the game.

The eighth inning became the key to Bridgeport's success as the team's bats came alive. The fight for the win started with a one-out walks for Chaves, Adam Greenberg, and Bocachica. Steve Moss then sent a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Chaves. Josh Phelps added three insurance runs with a home run over the center field wall.

Dan Serafini started the game for the 'Fish, allowing two runs on seven hits through five innings. The lefty finished with four walks and six strikeouts. Miguel Saladin fought through the next two innings, setting a new Bluefish record of 23 and two-thirds consecutive scoreless innings pitched. The reliever walked two and struck out three. The win was awarded to Antonio Alfonseca (2-2), giving up one run on three hits with one strikeout through one inning pitched.

In his third start of the year, John Koronka had a tough time finding the strike zone for Southern Maryland, giving up three runs on three hits over four innings of work. The former Major Leaguer struck out four and walked a season high seven batters. Bryan Dumesnil (1-2) took the loss, surrendering two runs with two walks and a strikeout through one-third of an inning.
