First selection in Entry Draft traded; Boyle to New York
September 12, 2006 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
In a blockbuster trade completed prior to the league's Entry Draft on Wednesday, September 13th, the San Jose Stealth have traded forwards Ryan Boyle, Matt Alrich and goaltender Matt Vinc to New York in exchange for the top overall selection in this year's Entry Draft, a conditional sixth round selection, and goaltender Aaron Bold.
San Jose now holds the first two overall selections in the Entry Draft, having acquired the first selections of both expansion teams in trades. The Stealth acquired the second overall selection from the Chicago Shamrox in exchange for defenseman Cam Woods in a trade on July 17th. If San Jose does not trade either selection, they would become the first club to select the first two players in an Entry Draft in the league's 21-year history. San Jose also acquires Bold, a 2006 rookie who was impressive in limited playing time. Bold played in three games, posted two wins and a .789 save percentage for Portland. He was acquired by New York in the Expansion Draft.
In return, the expansion New York franchise recieves Ryan Boyle, the 2005 NLL Rookie of the Year. Boyle led all rookies that year with 64 points (22 goals, 42 assists) and 95 loose balls. In 2006, he finished third on the Stealth in points with 44 (16 goals, 28 assists). Matt Vinc, a promising young goalie, was selected in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2005 NLL Entry Draft by San Jose. Vinc was an accomplished goaltender in Candian junior lacrosse, leading his teams to championships in 2001 and 2003. Matt Alrich was selected by San Jose in the third round (24th overall) in the 2004 NLL Entry Draft. In his second season with the Stealth, he tallied seven points (three goals, 4 assists) while scooping up 21 loose balls. During his collegiate career at the University of Delaware, Alrich was named first team All-Colonial Athletic Association after leading his team in scoring his senior year (34 goals and 12 assists). He finished his career with 103 points (83 goals and 20 assists).
