First Place in Sight as RailHawks Visit Eddies at Clarke Field
May 20, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (3W-2D-2L) welcome second-place Carolina RailHawks (4W-1D-2L) to Clarke Field, Sunday May 22 for a 2:00 p.m. kick-off. The Eddies are currently riding a four-game undefeated streak in North American Soccer League (NASL) play and will look to make it five while potentially leapfrogging into first place overall.
The Eddies are coming off a massive 2-1 victory over New York Cosmos last Sunday in league play at Clarke Field. Papé Diakité and Jason Plumhoff registered goals for the home side in a thrilling back and forth match. The Eddies squad then travelled to the nation's capital to take on Canadian rival Ottawa Fury FC at TD Place Stadium, May 18. The visitors captured a 2-0 victory over the Fury, with Dustin Corea and Adam Eckersley registering their first goals of 2016.
The Eddies have been on a roll of late, registering four wins, a draw and a loss across all competition and pushing up the league table into fourth place behind Minnesota United FC, RailHawks and the Cosmos. Diakité was named NASL Player of the Week and was also selected to NASL Team of the Week alongside teammate Dustin Corea.
"I'm very proud of the work that the whole staff and players have put in to get us into this position," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "At one point we seemed to be way out of touch with the top of the league and we've made some terrific strides to get ourselves into a challenging position for the Spring Season Championship."
The RailHawks have cooled off after opening 2016 with four straight victories. Since jumping out to an early lead in the Spring Season, the team has collected just a single point in three matches, yet remains in second place behind Minnesota with 13 points. On offence, the trio of Austin Da Luz, Brian Shriver and Tiyi Shipalane lead the squad with a combined seven of the team's 10 goals, while Nazmi Albadawi leads the league with four assists.
Sunday's match will have major implications in the league's Spring Season table. A victory for either side could potentially push the winner into first place overall with just a handful of matches remaining in the Spring Season campaign. Heading into the weekend's action, the Eddies sit just two points back of first place.
"Nobody is getting carried away," Miller added. "But if we can continue to build on the positives over the last few weeks, we are on a very good run and should be quietly confident about going into this game."
FC Edmonton and Carolina RailHawks kick off at Clarke Field, 2:00 p.m on May 22. The match will be broadcast live on City TV Edmonton and on ESPN 3 in the United States. For more tickets and more information, please click HERE. For more information on FC Edmonton, please visit www.fcedmonton.com.
