Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Despite a couple of Waterloo Black Hawks out of the lineup under suspension, big scoring early and late Friday pushed the Hawks to a 7-1 road victory against the Sioux Falls Stampede.
A strong start from the line of Taylor Cammarata, Zach Stepan, and Justin Kloos gave Waterloo a 3-0 lead before the first intermission. All three forwards touched the puck in quick succession before Stepan snapped a shot into the net from the left wing circle to open the scoring at 4:03. Cammarata built the advantage at 12:18, cutting across the slot for a chance after Kloos' feed from behind the net connected. Kloos scored one of his own at 18:09, lifting the puck over the glove of Charlie Lindgren from the high slot.
Sioux Falls claimed the second period, scoring the only goal of the frame with 11.1 seconds remaining before intermission. With the Hawks unable to clear the zone, Zeb Knutson flipped a shot from the left wing circle past Cal Petersen. The Stampede outshot Waterloo 18-7 in the second after Waterloo had an advantage on frame during the opening 20 minutes.
The Black Hawks pulled rapidly away from the Stampede in the third. Victor Newell fired a shot through traffic and the pads of Lindgren 4:10 into the frame. Just over a minute later with Waterloo on a power play, Kloos made the most of a Cammarata shot which had gone wide and caromed to the weak side of the net. Kloos' power play goal was followed by another at 8:00 by Mike Huntebrinker, banging in a rebound. Austin Vieth capped the scoring 15 seconds after that, knocking a chance over the goal line.
Petersen turned away 34 of 35 shots in the win. The Hawks were without J.T. Stenglein and Pijus Rulevicius who had been suspended for separate incidents last weekend against the Green Bay Gamblers.
While the Stampede enjoyed the USHL's second-best home record, Waterloo's next opponent is the only club with a better mark on home ice, the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The Black Hawks travel to meet Dubuque Saturday. Following a recovery day, the stretch of three games in four days resumes at Young Arena Monday versus the Fargo Force.
