Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats will lend a hand to a great cause Friday night when they head out to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Naples, Florida.
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life gives communities the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer in a rather unique manner. Relays are overnight, and they usually last 24 hours. Teams of 15 to 20 people camp at the host site, which is usually a local high school or park. They all take turns walking, running, or jogging around the track, keeping a representative on the track at all times.
The Relay for Life began in May 1985, when Dr. Gordon Klatt spent 24 hours on the track at the University of Puget Sound-Tacoma's Baker Stadium. Klatt circled the track for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid small amounts of money to walk or run with him. After the 24 hours ended, Klatt had raised $27,000 to fight cancer.
During the event, participants will be able to meet some of the Firecats, such as starting quarterback Ken Mastrole.
"It is important to support your community and an organization that does great things like the American Cancer Society," Mastrole said. "Every little bit helps a lot in the tough fight against cancer."
The Naples Relay for Life will be taking place on Friday at Gulfview Middle School, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Any questions surrounding the event can be addressed by calling the Naples Division of the American Cancer Society at (239) 261-0337.
