Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats headed off to Macon this morning to play the first of a four game road trip.
The Firecats (1-2) hope to avenge a last second playoff loss that the Macon Knights (1-2) handed them to finish their 2003 season. This will be the Firecats' first trip back to Macon since the loss. Florida wide receiver Anthony Snead returns to the Florida lineup to make his first trip back to Macon since leaving the defending American Conference champions in the off season. Snead caught 90 balls for 1,140 yards and 17 touchdowns last year for the Knights.
Also returning to the Firecats lineup for the first time this season is defensive specialist Roy Stabler. Stabler had a team leading 79.5 tackles for the Firecats last season. Stabler added four interceptions, four fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, and 19 pass breakups last season as well. Ironically, Stabler put up those numbers in 13 games, the same amount of regular season games remaining on the Florida schedule.
Along with Snead, who has caught five passes for 111 yards and three touchdowns, is Firecat standout Cainon Lamb. Lamb will likely break the Firecats' career touchdown record on Saturday. Lamb currently has 41 touchdown receptions, which is one short of the Firecat record. Lamb leads the offense with 28 receptions for 267 yards and nine touchdowns. Offensive specialist Magic Benton has 18 receptions for 245 yards and four touchdowns. Brent Burnside adds 12 catches for 83 yards and one score.
Heading up the Firecats' backfield is quarterback Ken Mastrole. Mastrole has completed 66 of his 114 pass attempts (.579) for 735 yards, 17 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Fullback Steve Gorrie has pounded his way on 16 carries for 78 yards (4.9 yards/carry) and two touchdowns. Gorrie is currently three yards short of Hawaii's Darnell Arceneaux to lead the entire arenafootball2 in rushing. Arceneaux has also played one more game than Gorrie. Up front for the Firecats will be Joe Fantigrassi, Comone Fisher, and Dunstan Anderson. Handling the kicking duties will be Brandon Kornblue.
Gorrie and Lamb join Chris Morant to head a tough linebacker corps. Morant has six tackles (1.5 for a loss), a sack, two breakups, two quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and fumble recovery, and a blocked field goal. Gorrie has 6.5 tackles, and Lamb has eight tackles and three pass deflections. In the defensive backfield with Stabler will be staple Firecat pass defender Qunicy Sorrell. Sorrell has a team leading 10.5 tackles, and he adds three deflections. Concluding the secondary will be Brent Burnside (one interception, three tackles) and Chris Davis (4.5 tackles). On the defensive front, Dante Booker ranks third in af2 with 3.5 tackles for a loss. Joining him on the defensive line will be Comone Fisher, Victor Hall, Keith Drayton, and Victor Hall.
Listen as the Florida Firecats take on their division rivals, the Macon Knights, on ESPN 770 AM. Kickoff is set for 7:30. The Firecats return home on May 29 when they host the Memphis Xplorers.
