Firebirds Announce Finalists for Teacher of the Year Awards

FLINT, Mich. - The Flint Firebirds announced on Friday the finalists for the second-annual Flint Firebirds Foundation Teacher of the Year Awards, sponsored by Sovita Credit Union and the Michigan Education Association.

In the Elementary category, the top three vote-getters were Shannon Shock of Kearsley Community Schools, Makayla McDaniels of Carman-Ainsworth Dillon Elementary and William Webb of Clio Intermediate. The finalists for the Secondary Education category are Amy Graham of Kearsley High School, Jordyn Hovis of Clio Middle School and Anthony Coggins of Holly High School, who passed away in October.

Nearly 10,000 votes were cast by the community for the 89 teachers who were nominated by their respective students. The teachers who were named finalists were visited by Firebirds mascot Hot Wing in their classroom and invited to take part in a special pre-game ceremony at Education Appreciation Night, also sponsored by Sovita Credit Union and the Michigan Education Association. The winner of both the Elementary and Secondary Education categories will be announced during the ceremony.

The Firebirds will host the Windsor Spitfires on Education Appreciation Night on Saturday. All educational employees can receive a free ticket to the game by showing proof of employment at the Dort Financial Center box office with proof of employment. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dort Financial Center.
