Flint Firebirds News Release
Flint, Mich. - The Flint Firebirds announced today that forward Matthew Wang has committed to an Ontario Hockey League standard player agreement with the club.
"I'm very excited to play for such an amazing organization with an incredible staff and team," Wang said. " I am now one step closer to achieving my dream."
Wang, who was initially committed to play Division One NCAA hockey, was the Firebirds' seventh-round pick (#126 overall) in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. He has spent the last two seasons in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) after being drafted by Flint from the U16 Oakville Rangers.
"The Flint Firebirds organization is excited to welcome Matthew and his family to Flint," Head Coach and General Manager Ted Dent said. "He has developed and matured in the last two years playing in the OJHL. We think he can make an immediate impact on our hockey team next year."
At 6-foot-2, 201-pound, Wang produced 25 G and 21 A in 49 GP this past season with the Oakville Blades (OJHL), an increase from 2 G and 6 A in 44 GP the year prior with the Blades.
"Coming into Flint I'm most excited to work with the coaches, players, and staff," Wang added. "I am a power forward who is capable of creating tons of offensive chances and is not afraid to shoot the puck. I can't wait to showcase my skills and play for such amazing fans."
The London, Ont.-native will wear number-28 in Flint.
Scouting Report from Head Scout Mike Oliverio: "Wang is a big body who led all in the physical testing at training camp. He is strong on his feet and along the boards. He has a good hockey IQ that allowed him to transition this year to center from the wing easily. He also competes hard with great character and work ethic."
