
FireAntz sting Polar Twins 8-0

[Fayetteville, N.C.] â The Fayetteville FireAntz scored eight goals on 63 shots as they raced past the Winston-Salem Polar Twins 8-0 at Crown Coliseum Saturday night in front of a crowd of 2,538.
The FireAntz outshot the Polar Twins 32-1 in the first period, setting a new SPHL and franchise record for shots in a period, and finished the game with a 3:1 shot margin at 63 to 21.
Fayetteville got on the board with only their third shot on goal as Shawn Roed collected a rebound in front of the net and beat Winston-Salem goaltender Jomar Cruz for his third goal of the season. Nick Kormanyos and Dean Jackson were credited with assists on the goal at 1:16 of the first period. Jackson put the FireAntz up 2-0 with his ninth of the season, sliding the puck into an empty net for an unassisted goal at 8:06 of the first frame.
The Polar Twins came out strong in the first part of the second period, getting six shots on goal to Fayetteville's one but could not get past goaltender Chad Collins.
Fayetteville added four more goals in the second frame, for a 6-0 lead heading into the intermission. Bryan Lachapelle's power play tally at 7:44 made it 3-0. Steve Roberts then added two, one shorthanded, to give the FireAntz the 5-0 lead. Captain Mike Fournier made it 6-0 when he drilled a screened shot past Cruz for his first goal of the season.
The FireAntz added salt to the wound, adding two more goals in the third period. Lachapelle put his second goal of the night into the net at the 2:36 mark of the period for a 7-0 game. Sean Edwards capped the scoring with Fayetteville's eighth unanswered goal, the winger's second of the season, for the 8-0 final.
The Polar Twins return to LJVM Annex Thursday, December 9 as the Knoxville Ice Bears come to town for a 7:30 p.m. start. Every fan who brings a toy to donate to FOX8's Gifts for Kids will receive $2 off their game ticket.
