Kitchener Rangers News Release

A new Rangers team is taking to the ice in Kitchener this winter but they're not quite what you're expecting. The Kitchener Fire Rangers, a team comprised of firefighters and police officers from Waterloo Region and throughout southern Ontario are gearing up for a showdown on the world stage. This coming August-September, New York City will play host to the 2011 World Police & Fire Games, a ten day competition, and the Fire Rangers are on a quest for gold.

The Games, held biennially, are expected attract up to 18,000 competitors from over 70 different countries making it one of the largest sporting events in the world paralleling the Olympic games. Traditionally held in June, this year's event has been moved to coincide with the 10th anniversary of 9/11. While individual members of the Kitchener Fire Department have competed in other sports at past Games, this is the first time Kitchener will have an opportunity to take to the ice in the highly competitive senior men's division and includes some Rangers alumni.

It isn't a coincidence that the Fire Rangers share the same name and the same uniform as their OHL namesake; the Kitchener Rangers organization is putting their full support behind the firefighter's team by helping with equipment and training needs.

While an honour to be selected to compete in the 2011 Games, the team will be doing a significant amount of fundraising to get to New York City in time for the August 26th opening ceremonies. "We have a lot of work ahead of us, both on & off the ice, but this is a great community and we are excited & confident we can do this together." says Fire Rangers Head Coach Jack 'Smokey' Egers, himself a Kitchener & New York Rangers alumnus with a 7 year NHL veteran.

To kick start fundraising efforts the team will be holding a gala dinner and auction on February 10th in the Kitchener City Hall Rotunda. The "Fire on Ice" Dinner Gala however will be anything but typical; the dinner menu features the culinary selections of firefighters and celebrity table service by Kitchener Rangers players while Rangers Head Coach and General Manager Steve Spott will be the special guest speaker for the evening.

Tickets for this family-friendly event are $50 for adults and $25 for children 16 and under and available at Kitchener Fire Headquarters (270 Strasburg Road) or by calling 519-741-2746. For further information visit http://www.kitchenerfirehockey.com/ www.kitchenerfirehockey.com .
