Louisville Fire News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Fire kicked off their home opener against the Manchester Wolves at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. The Fire put the heat on the Wolves in the first quarter as DS Jeremy Chandler recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. Three plays later FB Scott Power punched the ball into the end zone for six with an extra point follow-up by K Dave Hendrix. During the Wolves second possession they were forced to burn their first timeout before QB Kyle Rowley connected with WR Marc Bacote for their first touchdown of the night. The Fire led at the end of the first quarter over the Wolves 10-7.
After trailing the game into the second quarter, the Wolves took control with two touchdown passes from QB Rowley both to WR Bacote taking a 21-10 lead over the Fire before halftime. Opening the scoring in the third quarter the Fire advanced with a 4-yard touchdown run by FB Power only to be answered by a Wolves touchdown pass by QB Rowley to WR Bacote. One touchdown was scored by both teams to close out the third quarter Wolves 33, Fire 24. Wolves K Matt Russell failed to connect on two extra point conversions during the third quarter.
With eight minutes and sixteen seconds left in the game the Fire executed to perfection the only kickoff return for a touchdown in the entire contest. WR Nate Green narrowed the gap with a 54-yard kickoff return bringing the Fire within six points trailing the Wolves 39-34. The Wolves drove to increase their lead only to be denied as the Fire took control engaging in their final drive in hopes to take the lead.
Even though the Fire fought hard in their late fourth quarter it was not enough to muster a win in their 2006 home debut. Next week the Fire take on Birmingham Steeldogs on April 21, 2006 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY.
