Fire Back in First

The Louisville Fire (8-5) entered last Saturday night's game against with a three game losing streak, a half game behind the Quad City Steamwheelers for the division lead and the Peoria Pirates hot on their tail in the Midwest Division. After defeating Columbus, 63 – 61, the Fire now sits atop the Midwest Division thanks to the Tennessee Valley Vipers, 48 – 41, victory over Quad City.

The Fire trailed 40 – 28 at halftime, but were able to put the clamps down defensively and hold the Columbus to just 21 points in the second half. The Fire was sparked by the return of OS James Scott who caught 12 passes for 177 yards and five touchdowns. Tony Stallings also made his return from filming the Animal Planet reality show King of the Jungle by catching three passes for 37 yards, rushing five times for 34 yards and a touchdown, and returning five kicks for 138 yards, including a 57 – yard return for a touchdown to get the Fire on the scoreboard in the first quarter.

The Fire will travel this week to Hawaii to take on the Hawaiian Islanders (7-6). The Fire defeated the Islanders 37 – 35 in the Fire's first game of the season. Hawaii lost last weekend 43 – 41 to Bakersfield. This will be the third time the two teams have played with each team having won once. If the Fire wins this weekend they will at least maintain their half game led over Quad City in the division, the Steamwheelers will take on the South Division leading Birmingham Steeldogs this weekend.

No team from the Midwest Division has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

The Fire will return home on July 24 to take on the Green Bay Blizzard at 7:30 p.m. in Freedom Hall. This will be the final regular season home game for the Fire in 2004 and the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a Louisville Fire t-shirt courtesy of GMAC.
