Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release

PORT HURON, MI -  The Port Huron Fighting Falcons, proud members of the North American Hockey League, extended their lead atop the North Division to nine points with a 2-1 win over the second-place Michigan Warriors Wednesday night at McMorran Arena.

The Fighting Falcons (31-14-8, 70 points) became the first North Division team to reach 70 points on the season, and remain in striking distance of the franchise record of 79 points, set in the 2011-12 season. The team also eclipsed last season's point total of 68 with last night's win.

Austin Romzek opened the scoring just over three minutes into the first period, with assists to Matt Jones and Jon Hall. The goal snapped a six-game scoreless streak for Romzek.

In his 100th regular-season start with the Fighting Falcons, goalie Max Milosek saw his bid for a third consecutive home shutout come to an end as Colin Horton deflected a Josh Shellman shot past him to tie the game at one goal apiece in the second period. The goal snapped a home shutout streak of over 170 minutes for Milosek.

The Fighting Falcons would answer back later in the second, as Jon Hall became the eighth Fighting Falcons skater to reach ten goals on the season. Reed Scahill and Matt Jones assisted on the play, with a shot from Scahill getting past Warriors goalie Trevor Gorsuch, but likely lacking the momentum needed to cross the line. Hall punched it in for what would ultimately be the game-winning goal.

The Warriors took three penalties in the final 7:30 of a scoreless third period, and were unable to beat Milosek a second time.

The win was another in a great stretch at home for Milosek, who is undefeated in six starts at McMorran Arena in 2014. The three-year veteran still has more shutouts (4) than goals allowed (3) in his home rink since the start of the year.

Wednesday's win was just the third against the Warriors for the Fighting Falcons, who had dropped four in a row against the in-state rivals heading into the game. The Fighting Falcons had not beaten the Warriors since October until last night.

Nearly $1000 in cash prizes were won at Wednesday's game between the chuck-a-puck game and 50/50 drawing.

The Fighting Falcons are two points away from clinching home-ice advantage in the first round of the 2014 Robertson Cup Playoffs. Port Huron has more work to do to clinch their second North Division championship, as they are as much as eight points away from reaching that goal.

The team can continue to inch closer to a division championship as they host the Soo Eagles in the final weekend series of the regular season at McMorran Arena this Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Saturday's game features a drawing for $1 per person in attendance, with the prize growing with each person through the doors. Family four-packs are available Sunday, with four tickets, four hot dogs and four fountain drinks for just $34. The team has also begun an auction for game-worn jerseys, with opening bids at just $90, and a buy-it-now price of $125.

Tickets to any Fighting Falcons home game are available at the McMorran Arena Box Office, starting at just $7 for seniors, students and military. For more information, call the team's front office at (810) 966-3800.
