Fighting Falcons Set New Record for Points in a Season with Weekend Split
March 31, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Fighting Falcons, proud members of the North American Hockey League, wrapped up the 2013-14 regular season with four points in three games against the Michigan Warriors to set a new franchise record with 80 points on the season.
Following a 2-1 overtime loss last Wednesday, the Fighting Falcons were three points shy of a new record heading into a home-and-home series with the Warriors.
Port Huron continued to roll at home Friday, as their 3-0 win was their eighth in a row at McMorran Arena. Max Milosek made 29 saves in his fifth shutout of the season. All of Milosek's shutouts have come at home in 2014, where he's won each of his last eight starts.
Bryan Yim, Matt Jones and Bryce VanHorn scored for Port Huron. Noah Batis had two assists, while Niko Coffman, Yim, Zach Badalamenti and Logan Lambdin added one each.
Friday's win gave the Fighting Falcons 79 points on the season, tying a team record set in the 2011-12 season.
Heading into Saturday's game, Port Huron needed just one point to set a new record for points in a season, and Michigan needed a point to clinch the second seed in the North Division. With the score locked at 4-4 at the end of regulation, both teams got their wish.
The Warriors edged the Fighting Falcons for a 5-4 shootout victory, earning home-ice advantage for the first round of the 2014 Robertson Cup Playoffs in the process.
Logan Lambdin scored twice for the Fighting Falcons, with Jon Hall and Austin Romzek netting one goal apiece. Bryce VanHorn had two assists, and Garrett Halford and Reed Scahill added one helper each.
Alex Blankenburg topped 40 saves for the second straight game, turning away 43 Warriors shots in the loss.
The Fighting Falcons finish their record-setting 2013-14 season with a 35-15-10 record, winning the North Division by a league-best 10 points.
In other North Division action, the Janesville Jets swept the Johnstown Tomahawks, and the Springfield Jr. Blues split a weekend series against the Soo Eagles. If the Fighting Falcons had earned a regulation win Saturday, the Jets would have won the tiebreaker over the Warriors for second place. If Springfield had swept the Soo, they would have moved into the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Fighting Falcons begin their quest for the Robertson Cup this week, when they take on the Johnstown Tomahawks Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. at McMorran Arena. Tickets are available at the McMorran Arena Box Office, starting at just $8 for seniors, students and military. For more information, contact the Fighting Falcons front office at (810) 966-3800.
