Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GREAT FALLS - The Great Falls Voyagers (13-9) scored twelve runs in the fifth inning en route to a 15-3 spanking of the Billings Mustangs (12-9). The inning, the best of the year for the Voyagers, placed the outcome in the game in little doubt as the win gave the Voyagers outright possession of first place for the first time this season.
The first few innings resembled the first two games of the season: a close fought contest. The Voyagers scored first - the first time the Voyages scored first in the series - with two runs in the bottom of the second, including one on a Yoandy Barroso RBI triple. Barroso finished the game with three hit, three RBI, and a stolen base. The Mustangs rallied back for two in the third of reliever Zach Isler, and the game was tied at 2-2.
The Voyagers grabbed one back in the bottom half, before the Mustangs tied the game for a second time at 3-3. The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth. Justin Jirschele opened the floodgates with a leadoff walk, and by the time the dust settled, over half an hour had passed, the Voyagers had sent seventeen hitters to the plate, scored a dozen times, and seven hits, three walks, a hit batter, two errors, four wild pitches, and one manager ejection had transpired. Mike Marjama struck the biggest blows in the inning as the catcher smashed a double and a triple and collected four RBI in the frame. The twelve run inning was the highest scoring of the year for the Voyagers.
Both teams settled from there, and a combination of Ryan Bollinger (2-2), Cal Bowling, and Brandon Hardin kept the Mustangs off the board for the final four innings to grant the Voyagers the 15-3 victory. The Voyager pitching was sensational for the whole series, allowing a combined six runs and fifteen hits over three games.
The Voyagers now head south for a long road trip. Getting their first look at inter-divisional play, the Voyagers head to Utah and Idaho for a seven-game, nine-day set against the Ogden Raptors and Idaho Falls Chukars. The first series, with Ogden starting Wednesday night, matches up the top two teams in the Pioneer League.
