Lake County Fielders News Release
The Lake County Fielders of the newly formed North American Baseball League have been making several player trades in preparation for the 2011 season.
Outfielder and power hitter Josh Short has been sent to the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association for outfielder Argelis Nuñez. In 2010, Nuñez hit .303 in 97 games. He set a career high with 22 home runs and drove in a career-best 82 runs. Nuñez was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks as a nondrafted free agent in 1998 and spent time with the triple-A Tucson Sidewinders before being released in 2002. He was later signed for another short stint with the Diamondbacks, as a member of the high-A Lancaster Jethawks, before making his way into the independent league circuit in 2008.
The Fielders continued moves with the Saltdogs by trading John Nelson and a player to be named later for outfielder Rafael Alvarez, outfielder Roberto Alvarez, and a player to be named later. Rafael hit .326 in 96 games in 2010. While with the Saltdogs, the left-handed hitter racked up 29 doubles and 78 runs while driving in 53. Signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Minnesota Twins in 1994, Rafael worked with the triple-A club in Salt Lake during both 1997 and 1999 seasons before being granted free agency in 2000. He played for a variety of independent teams and with Pittsburgh's double-A team before signing with Lincoln in the latter half of the 2009 season.
Roberto hit .283 in 68 games for the Saltdogs last year, with 31 runs scored and 25 RBIs. After signing with the Atlanta Braves, he played one year in the Dominican Summer League before playing with Brockton in the Can-Am League. Despite a solid first season in 2007, injuries limited him with Brockton in 2008 and 2009, and Roberto signed with the Saltdogs for the 2010 season.
The Fielders are members of the newly formed North American Baseball League and represent Lake County's only professional sports team. The team is owned in part by long-time baseball fanatic and Academy award-winning actor Kevin Costner. Season ticket packages are now on sale at www.fieldersbaseball.com or by calling 847-731-8000.
