AUSTIN, Texas - Tamika Catchings scored 16 points and rookie point guard Briann January added 12 Tuesday night as the Indiana Fever beat the San Antonio Silver Stars in a WNBA preseason game at the Austin Convention Center. It was the final preseason game for both teams.
The Fever commanded a 38-22 lead at the intermission, outscoring the defending Western Conference champions 19-7 in a decisive second quarter. Catchings paced Indiana with 13 points by halftime, on 5-of-7 shooting with a pair of steals. January started her second game of the preseason, scoring nine points by halftime.
Indiana forward Katie Douglas added 10 points for the Fever whose balanced attack saw only three players - Catchings and fellow starters Khadijah Whittington and Tammy Sutton-Brown - play more than 20 minutes. The Fever had 11 steals in the game and forced 20 turnovers.
Indiana stretched its lead to 21 points after three quarters, 61-40, and withstood a San Antonio rally in the final quarter for the win. The Fever finished its preseason unbeaten in three games. The Silver Stars were winless in two contests. San Antonio got 12 points from Becky Hammon and 10 from Sophia Young.
The Fever opens its 10th WNBA season Saturday, when it travels to Atlanta. A day later, exactly 10 years from the day Indianapolis was awarded the WNBA franchise (June 7, 1999), the Fever hosts the Minnesota Lynx in its 2009 home opener (7:00 p.m.).
