Fernandez Dazzles, But Generals Drop Rubber Match in Extras

JACKSON, TENN. (JULY 28, 2012) - Anthony Fernandez allowed two runs on four hits in the first inning, but surrendered just three hits over the next six innings. The effort wasn't enough though on Saturday as Montgomery won the rubber match in 10 innings, 3-2. The loss dropped the Generals to 3-8 in extra inning affairs this season.

The two runs for Montgomery were scored in the first on an RBI groundout from Omar Luna, followed by an RBI double by Mikie Mahtook. Montgomery led 2-0.

Jackson trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning when Nate Tenbrink scored on an error by Mahtook, the Biscuits right fielder.

The Generals tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout from Ralph Henriquez.

The game went to extra innings tied at 2-2 and in the top of the 10th inning Mahtook delivered a sacrifice fly to right scoring Shawn O'Malley giving the Biscuits a 3-2 edge.

Jackson failed to score in the bottom of the 10th against Montgomery closer Kirby Yates and fell, 3-2, dropping their second straight series.

Jackson starter Anthony Fernandez came away with a no decision despite allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits over 7.0 innings. Fernandez struck out 7 and walked none. Jandy Sena (1-2) allowed the winning run in the 10th and suffered the loss.

Jackson's Brad Miller was 2-for-3, reaching base four times and Rich Poythress was 2-for-5, with a run scored.

The Generals hit the road and will open a 5-game series in Birmingham on Sunday, with first pitch at 4:00 p.m. at Regions Park. A to be announced pitcher will go for the Generals against RHP Andre Rienzo (3-1, 2.91) for Birmingham..
