Friday, March 12th, FC Tampa Bay Rowdies will have their first chance to test their grit and ability against an MLS side when they face off against FC Dallas.
With two weeks of practice and one preseason game under their belt, the Rowdies have a few goals in mind for the match. Using the University of Tampa game as guidance, the team looks to grow on a few key aspects of their game. An added boost will be given as Japanese international Takuya Yamada and starting right back Jason Beardsley have reported for training and will play Friday night.
"We kept possession very well against UT but didn't have any penetration. We were a little bit predictable, which is expected early on in the season because we have had no time to work on the system and to get comfortable with it," said Coach Paul Dalglish. "But we also learned that we have some very talented players that fit into our attacking style of play. There is a lot of work to do, we need to keep developing our style of play and the system but the future is very bright."
After reviewing the game tape on Sunday, Dalglish and Technical Director Perry Van Der Beck decided to focus on different ways in which the team could turn possession into possession with a purpose. "The team needs to start penetrating the opposition and create more goal scoring opportunities," Dalglish said.
Dalglish and coaching staff also focused this week on getting the players fitter for the match through strength and conditioning training at Saddlebrook Resort and yoga lessons. He sees player frustration with fitness as the greatest hurdle for the Friday night game.
"Fitness is the biggest thing that FC Dallas has over us Friday evening. They are almost 100% fit where as we are only 10 days into a seven-week training program," said Dalglish. "We have to develop the players' fitness gradually, rather than having them fully fit now and burning out during the middle of the season."
Overall Dalglish is excited by what the players have shown him over the past two weeks in Tampa.
"I'm quite pleased with the caliber of players we have on our roster. Not only do they have the ability but they also have the character we want to associate with our organization and have in the community. It's going to be a pleasure to work with them throughout the season."
The match this Friday, March 12, kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Pepin Stadium. All proceeds from the game will go towards the Tom Fitzgerald Scholarship Fund at University of Tampa.
Adults $10, 17 and Under $5. Tickets are available online or at the gate (cash only)
