FC Tulsa Set to Get Back on Track against Sporting KC II on Saturday Night

August 28, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release

TULSA - Time to get back on track. After just two points earned out of the last three matches, FC Tulsa has a sense of urgency to get back in the win column on Saturday night at ONEOK Field as the match marks the halfway point of the 2020 season. Playing against Sporting KC II in Tulsa's first Saturday home match of the season, three points would push FC Tulsa back into a Group D playoff spot.

It was a controversial defeat last time out for Tulsa as the USL Championship ruled San Antonio's 2-0 victory stood despite SAFC exceeding the amount of substitution stoppages allowed. On the flip side, Sporting KC II is coming off a 3-0 win at home over OKC Energy FC.

This will be the penultimate out of group match for FC Tulsa, but the possible points remain vital for Tulsa as it pushes for a playoff spot for the first time since 2017.

ABOUT SPORTING KC II

The club formerly known as Swope Park Rangers underwent a rebrand over the offseason to better align with its MLS parent club, Sporting Kansas City. While the name has changed, the club remains an MLS2 team, fielding plenty of youngsters out of the SKC system. It's been a roller coaster season for the Sporting KC II nabbing wins on the road over Indy Eleven and Louisville City FC, but suffering defeats to Charlotte Independence and Saint Louis FC. Like many MLS2 teams, SKC II's matchday roster will be dependent on who Sporting Kansas City elects to place on its roster for its MLS match on Saturday night.

SERIES HISTORY

Due to geographical proximity and the fact that Sporting Kansas City II was formerly a Western Conference team before a shift to the East in 2019, the sides have met eight times over the last five years. Of those eight meetings, SKC II has won seven with the last official meeting being FC Tulsa's only result, a 1-1 draw in September of 2018.

PRESEASON FRIENDLY

In a preseason match that seems like a lifetime ago, FC Tulsa and Sporting KC II met at Titan Sports Complex in February for a final tune up before the USL Championship regular season. It ended up being Tulsa's only preseason defeat as SKC II scored a late penalty to come out on top 2-1.

TULSA & SKC TIES

It's not just proximity that ties FC Tulsa and Sporting KC II. There are players on both sides of the pitch that are familiar with the opposition. Tulsa midfielder Ciaran Winters spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons with Sporting Kansas City's Developmental Academy. Winters played and became friends with many of the players that now populate the SKC II roster. Midfielder Lebo Moloto played for then-Swope Park Rangers in 2017 and helped lead that team to the USL Championship Final with seven goals and four assists in his lone season in Kansas City. Finally, SKC II forward Fredlin Mompremier played in Tulsa last year.
