Austin Bold FC News Release

Austin, TX - The entire Austin Bold FC organization would like to congratulate Assistant Coach and Goalkeeping Director Ryan Thompson for receiving his National A-Senior License from U.S. Soccer.

Thompson began his time with The Bold as goalkeeping coach in 2019 and progressed to assistant coach in 2020.

The A-Senior License focuses on coaching a team at a high level. It's a five-to-six month course with the same three five-day classes separated by six-to-eight weeks of assignments and mentoring.

"In 2017 when I walked away from the national team, I made a commitment to myself that I'm going to invest the same time and effort I did with playing into coaching. It's something I realize that I have a passion for. You really see the reward when you start teaching and the impact it has on people's lives immediately. I feel like I have a lot to offer to the game and having this new knowledge plus my expertise as a player, and ability to connect with people put me in a good spot to add value every day. That is my goal. Add value, inspire, and bring joy to the sport," said Thompson. "I'm grateful for the support from my mentors Marcelo Serrano and Garret Smith, instructors Dave and Stefan, and my family for being there through late nights."

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Thompson earned 12 caps with the Jamaica national team, collecting six wins in eight starts. Thompson helped guide Jamaica to a runner-up result in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, entering in the final match of the group stage to preserve a 1-0 victory over El Salvador to win Group B. He then posted a clean sheet in a 1-0 triumph over Haiti in the quarterfinals and a 2-1 victory over the United States in the semifinal before falling to Mexico in the final.

During his collegiate career at the University of Tampa, Thompson was a two-time All-American and led the Spartans to an NCAA Division II Final Four appearance his junior season. He garnered two Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Year nods and was a two-time All-SCC First Team honoree.

Thompson made his professional debut in 2011 with Shamrock Rovers FC of the Irish Premier League, helping guide the club to a league championship. While with the Rovers, he appeared in the Europa Cup and became the first Jamaican to play in the UEFA Champions League. Following his time with Shamrock Rovers FC, Thompson played with Swedish club Väsby United in 2012, Thompson returned to the United States in 2014 with the NASL side Tampa Bay Rowdies. In 2016 he joined the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL and played for St. Louis FC the following season.
