FC Tulsa Brings Back USL Championship Veteran Cyprian Hedrick
December 9, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
TULSA - FC Tulsa is bringing back one of its veteran leaders for 2020. Last year's captain Cyprian Hedrick has been re-signed and will return to the club, pending league and federation approval. Hedrick enters the 2020 season as one of the league's most established players in what will be his eighth season in the USL Championship.
"With any team, it is important that you have players that understand your principles," said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. "Cyprian not only understands my expectations of the team and the players, he is approaching 170 games in this league, and he knows how to compete at this level successfully. We expect Cyprian to help shape a winning culture for this team, while he continues to perform at a high level. On day one, he will be a major part of setting the tone for this season."
The Cameroonian was a rock at the center back position last season for FC Tulsa, playing every minute in 33 of the 34 matches in 2019. Hedrick missed just a single match with a yellow card suspension. As a defender, Hedrick contributed one goal and one assist last season while recording 176 clearances, the second-most of any player in the USL Championship.
"I'm excited to be a small part of the big changes happening with soccer here in Tulsa," said Hedrick. "I can't wait to get to work with my teammates to give this city a team they want to get behind and support."
The durability numbers should come as no surprise. Following the 2019 season, Hedrick ranks in the top 12 of active USL Championship players in both appearances and minutes. When adding in Hedrick's 33 appearances and 2,970 minutes last year, the defender has now played in 166 regular season matches with 13,854 minutes over his past seven season in the league, ranking 12th and 7th among active players, respectively. All time in league history, those marks put Hedrick 15th in appearances and 10th in minutes.
Hedrick is the first defender announced to FC Tulsa's 2020 roster, joining forward Marlon and midfielder Cristhian Altamirano.
